Getting Your Farm Ready For Spring

Prepare the Soil

Before you get your farm equipment ready for the spring, you should make sure that the soil itself is fully prepared. Winter tends to create wet soil, which can result in compaction, harm to your equipment, and make it harder for your crops to get nutrients. 

Once the soil has fully dried, mow down the cover crop and let it dry out. This will allow it to be incorporated into the soil so that your plants get extra nutrients. This should be done early, as the cover crops need about three to six weeks to fully blend into the soil. Once planting has begun, you can start making compost and checking your soil’s pH balance. 

Ensure Livestock Health

If you’re raising animals, you can use the warmer temperatures as a chance to allow them out on the pasture more so that you can clean up their living space. Be sure to completely muck their pens so that they have a clean, dry place to stay. Early spring is also a good time to make sure that your livestock is up to date when it comes to vaccinations. Inspect Your Equipment

Now it’s finally time to inspect your equipment! Check for rust and other signs of deterioration. Your equipment needs to be in the best possible working condition, so take a look at the fluid levels, belts, tires, and whatever else might need your attention. You should keep performing regular inspections and maintenance throughout the spring to ensure that your equipment continues to function properly.
